2024 World Wide Technology Championship Preview

After a week’s break the FedEx Fall Season is back underway with this week’s World Wide Technology Championship.

With time running out for those wanting to ensure their PGA Tour status for next season, the World Wide Technology Championship stands to be one of the key weeks of the season.

Set to be played at the Tiger Woods designed El Cardonal, here is everything you can expect from this week.

The Course

This will be the second year that the World Wide Technology Championship will take place at El Cardonal. Set in the picturesque setting of Los Cabos, one thing that a player will need this week is a hot putter and accuracy from off the fairways.

Driving this week should be a formality. The fairways at El Cardonal are some of the widest on the PGA Tour and on some holes the breadth of fairways can exceed 60 yards.

With the bulk of the field being able to play their second shots from the luxury confines of the fairways, the tournament is likely to come down to a shootout from the fairways and putting greens.

Measuring at just under 7,500 yards the course comprises numerous short par 4s and four par 5s and is perfectly set up to be a scorer’s dream. Last year’s winner, Erik Van Rooyen won the tournament with a score of -27, there is plenty of expectations that a similar score will be needed for victory this week.

Who Should we be Keeping an Eye Out For?

Keeping an Eye Out

With the majority of the best players on the PGA Tour opting to miss the bulk of the FedEx Fall Season, this week once again offers an opportunity for some of the PGA Tour’s lesser known names to shine.

Leading the betting is Max Greyserman. Ranked at 40 in the world, Greyserman is one of the highest ranked players in the field and has enjoyed a meteoric rise up the rankings thanks to a career defining year.

Although he is yet to taste victory on Tour, he has come close on several occasions and can boast three second place finishes in his last five starts including the PGA Tour’s last stop, the Zozo Championship.

One of the emerging names on the PGA Tour, Greyserman will be wanting to finish his season with a flourish and capture that elusive first title that his talents clearly deserve.

Speaking of trying to win a first PGA Tour title, that has never been more relevant when speaking about Cameron Young.

Ranked 33 in the world and once as high as 13, Young is the highest ranked player in the field and will be desperate to win a first PGA Tour title. Named the PGA Tour rookie of the year back in 2022, Young looked like he would be a perennial major contender and that was exemplified by his second place finish at the 2022 Open.

However since the end of 2022, Young’s game has regressed slightly and the confidence he carried back then seems to be on the wane.

Two top ten finishes in his last six starts is certainly not to be sniffed at, however his last four starts have seen him make the cut but finish well down the field.

A huge hitter of the ball, there is a real feeling that this week’s layout could be perfectly set up to suit. As he showed at the Travelers Championship when his putter is hot, few can match him and he was unlucky not to break 60 during a memorable third round. If he can come close to repeating those heroics he could be a major force this week.

Completing the top three in the betting is Doug Ghim. Currently ranked at a career high world ranking of 90, Ghim has made the most of the Fall Swing and has all but assured his immediate PGA future thanks to his second place finish at the Shriners Children’s Open a few weeks ago.

Solid and consistent, Ghim has made seven consecutive cuts and will once again fancy his chances for victory this week. Having posted a top six effort at the 2022 Players Championship, Ghim knows what it takes to compete well at some of the most prestigious PGA Tour events and will hope that this could be the week where he lands his first PGA title. Whether he has the length to compete on a course of this nature remains to be seen.

Are There Any Players at Longer Odds Worth Chancing?

Longer Odds Worth Chancing

With an absence of so many big names the betting for the World Wide Technology Championship certainly has a wide open feel to it.

One man who looks to be carrying generous odds is Harris English. Having reached the very top of the game and the top ten in the world rankings, English has had to rebuild his career due to a troubling back injury, taking significant time away from the game to recover and rehab, the five time PGA Tour winner seems to be having his game trending in the right direction again and has posted two top ten efforts in both of his last two starts.

A classy operator, English has winning experience that only a very select few in this field can match and that experience could prove invaluable this week.

Another man who looks to be generously priced this week is Lucas Glover. Although Glover is a veteran of the Tour, he is still an incredibly classy player who on his day is capable of leaving his mark.

A former major winner and multiple time PGA Tour champion, after a slow start to the season the former world number 15 seems to have discovered his best swing and can boast two consecutive third place finishes from his last two starts.

With Glover exempt on Tour next season thanks to his two victories last season, there is no pressure for him to perform this week. Able to swing the club easily and freely he could be one of the best value options of the entire week.
