After a year’s delay where a storm ripped through the stadium where the inaugural TGL was due to be played, momentum is starting to gather ahead of the new format finally starting in January.
The brainchild of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, the TGL features a host of the PGA Tour’s top stars and there are hopes that if successful, TGL could help transform the way golf is played and broadcast.
Different to every type of golf that is currently broadcast across the media, TGL is set to take the sporting world by storm. With the clock ticking down until the first shot is hit, here is everything that you need to know.
How is the TGL different to other golf?
The main difference that TGL provides over standard golf is that the competition will take place indoors and contain a mixture of digital and real play.
A hole will be played as standard but the opening tee shot will see players hit their drives into a huge digital screen. The screen will accurately track the ball flight and the overall yardage.
Players will continue to play into the screen until they reach a yardage that falls within TGL’s ‘Green Zone’.
The Green Zone sees the players move away from the digital world and into the real one. Hitting into a tech infused putting green, players will be required to hit onto the green and then play until they put the ball into the hole.
The greens can change in their form which should mean that every hole has a different feel to it.
What is the format?
TGL revolves around team play and for their inaugural season there are six teams that will be competing for the first place prize.
Matches will see two teams square off against one another across two sessions. The first session focuses on a triples match, where three players from Team A will take on three players from Team B.
The format will be alternate shots with each of the three players taking turns to hit their shots. The session will be played over nine holes and will follow match play conventions, with the lowest score winning the hole.
The match will last nine holes before the second session focuses on singles play. Containing just one player from each team, the singles match lasts just six holes but is played in a similar fashion to a match play event.
The scores will carry over across the sessions and after all 15 holes have been played, a winning will be announced.
What if there is a tie?
If after the fifteen holes the match is still tied the match will be settled by a closest to the pin competition. Each team will choose three players to hit a shot and whoever ends up hitting the closest shot to the hole will win the contest for their side.
What are the teams?
As we have previously mentioned there will be six teams competing in this year’s TGL. Representing six American cities, the teams are as follows.

Patrick Cantlay
Justin Thomas
Billy Horschel
Boston Common

How is TGL structured?
TGL contains two phases. The first is a league phase where each team will play the other. For every match that is won, a team will win two points.
The four teams that finish in the top four will then advance to the semi finals with the team finishing first playing the team that finishes fourth and the team finishing second playing the team in third.
After the semifinals the two winners will advance to the final where a best of three contest will be played and a champion crowned.
Where is TGL being played
The TGL will be played in Florida at the SoFi Center. Around 250,000 square feet in length, it is estimated that 1,500 people will be able to watch each match that is played.
When does it start?
The action will tee off on January 7th with the first match being between New York and the Bay Golf Club.
Tiger Woods makes his debut a week later when Jupiter take on LA.
Atlanta will make their first appearance on January 21st when they take on New York with Boston being the last team to hit the digital course on the 27th January when they square off against Jupiter.
Can players from LIV Golf feature?
At its heart the TGL was created as an added measure to try and keep the PGA Tour’s best players from defecting to LIV Golf. Therefore those currently aligned to the Saudi funded Tour won’t be eligible to play in the TGL.
Although the likes of Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Jon Rahm and Cam Smith would all add star power to the competition, all of the above are currently ineligible for selection.
Where can the action be watched?
Unlike LIV, the TGL has been able to secure a major TV deal with ESPN, several other major European networks have been able to secure rights which should mean that the TGL can be viewed all over the world.
Positioning itself as golf’s modern day answer, highlights will be clipped across social media as and when the action unfolds. There should be no shortage of keeping up to date with all things TGL.
