For many on the PGA Tour the Wyndham Championship has long been circled on their calendars. The final tournament before the FedEx Playoffs begin next week, the Wyndham offers one final opportunity for those to make the top 70 in the FedEx standings and fight for a chance to make the season ending Tour Championship.
With huge money and full PGA playing rights on the line, the start of the Wyndham has been delayed by Storm Debby and although we have reached now Saturday, the first round of the tournament hasn’t even been completed.
Likely to last just three rounds, some in the field have the tough prospect of having to play over 40 holes over the next two days.
With so much to play out over the next 48 hours let’s take a look back at what has happened so far and what we can expect over the next few days.
Beau Hossler makes the best of the conditions to lead the way on -10
Starting the week 88th in the FedEx rankings, Beau Hossler has got his week off to a fantastic start and the American currently leads the field on -10.
Able to complete his round, Hossler has the added luxury of being able to sit back knowing what is ahead of him whilst others still need to complete their opening rounds.
With the Sedgefield Country Club having been softened up by the huge amount of rainfall, the greens and fairways were made that little bit easier and Hossler used all of his experience to good effect.
Picking up four birdies on his opening four holes, it would get even better for the American who would move to -6 after just five holes thanks to an Eagle on the fifth hole.
Five more birdies would follow in the remainder of his round and he would just drop the one shot to card an opening round 60 and position himself at the top of the leaderboard. Knowing a victory or a top three finish is likely to move him inside the top 70 in the race to make the Playoffs, a huge two days awaits.
Billy Horschel continues good form and remains in the hunt for his second title of the season
2024 has been a redemption year for Billy Horschel. The former World Matchplay Champion, Horschel was once ranked as high as eleven in the world and it's easy to forget what a classy operator he is.
A winner down in Dominica earlier this season, Horschel recorded his best ever Major finish when he finished in a tie for 2nd at the Open. With his game in full working order, Horschel sits second on the leaderboard, just two strokes behind Hossler with still two holes of his opening round to play.
Already assured of his spot in the FedEx rankings, a win this weekend will move him up to the top ten and give him a great chance of making the Tour Championship. A swagger is back in the American’s step and he will hope to claim a second title of the season over the weekend.
Nick Taylor rounds out the top three and will look to strengthen his position in the FedEx standings
The memory of Nick Taylor winning the Canada Open back in 2023 still lives long in the memory and ever since that stunning victory, Taylor has become a consistent performer on Tour.
Currently ranked 50th in the FedEx rankings, Taylor’s place in the Playoffs is already assured but like Horschel he will hope to use this week to move further up the standings.
Positioned third on -7, Taylor still has four holes of his opening round to play and could well move up the leaderboard further before the second round begins. The winner of the Phoenix Open earlier this season, Taylor could be one of the best value picks of the entire weekend.
Time is running out for several big names
Not making the season ending playoffs can mean that playing in some of the PGA Tour’s biggest events can be difficult and for some established stars time is quickly running out on their quest to make the final 70.
Last year’s Wyndham Championship winner, Lucas Glover started the week 76th in the overall playoff standings and is in need of a good tournament here to secure his place in the top 70.
Currently sitting on -1 with five holes of his opening round to play, Glover will need to get a move on today and will need to fly up the leaderboard if he is to claim the high finish he needs. Look for him to hunt down flags today.
Although he is firmly towards the end of his playing career, Matt Kuchar has an outside chance of making the top 70 but needs to win this week in order to do so.
He has given himself an outside chance of victory after an opening round 64, which sees him currently occupy fourth place. Four shots off the lead at the start of today, Kuchar was able to finish his round yesterday and has been able to rest up whilst others still play.
Needing to make significant moves today, Kuchar could be one to watch with real interest.
Joel Dahmen has become one of the PGA Tour’s most popular players due to his starring role in the Netflix documentary, ‘Full Swing’.
Dahmen has spoken candidly about his love / hate affair with golf and it’s been a tough year. Currently sitting 117th in the FedEx standings, Dahmen needs a win to propel himself into the final 70 but has a huge job on his hands.
Currently sitting on -1 after thirteen holes of his opening round. Dahmen is nine shots off the pace and has plenty of work to do if he is to climb into contention by the end of today.
