After two rounds of the World Wide Technology Championship the leaderboard is evenly poised with Nicolas Echavarria and Max Greyserman sharing the lead at -12.
Cam Young who is seeking a first PGA Tour title is tucked just a stroke behind with a whole host of players lying within five strokes. With precious FedEx points and potentially careers on the line there is plenty to play for.
Here are the main talking points from the first two days of action.
Max Greyserman aims to finish fantastic season in style with maiden PGA Tour victory
Max Greyserman has enjoyed a brilliant season on Tour. At 29, it’s fair to say that Greyserman’s breakthrough has come fairly late but he has been able to put the years of battling on the Korn Ferry Tour to good effect this season.
Playing in his second full PGA season, Greyserman has steadily climbed the world rankings this season and is now at a career high ranking of 40.
Having turned into one of the most consistent players on the PGA Tour over the last few months, Greyserman is yet to land a PGA title but he has certainly been close on several occasions.
Heading into this weekend fresh off the back of second place finishes at the 3M Open, Wyndham and Zozo Championships, he was also able to finish seventh at the Texas Children’s Open earlier in the season.
Clearly swinging the club as well as he has done at any stage of his career, Greyserman will hope to go one place better this weekend and land the first PGA title of his career.
Cam Young also aiming to become a PGA winner for the first time
Despite being named the PGA Rookie of the Year back in 2022, it’s remarkable that Cam Young is still yet to win his first PGA title.
A runner up at the 2022 Open, Young has also filled the second spot on the podium on seven further occasions. A fine striker of the ball, despite his reasonably diminutive stature, Young consistently ranks amongst the biggest hitters on the PGA Tour and when his putter is firing, there are few in the game that can keep up.
Formerly ranked as high as 13 in the world, 2024 has been tricky for the talented American and a string of finishes that have seen him finish well down the leaderboard now see him ranked at 33rd in the world.
Top ten finishes at Rocket Mortgage Classic, Travelers Championship, Valspar and Masters still suggest that Young is capable of putting in a winning effort, but he will need to find some composure to get over the line this time around.
There will be no man more motivated to win this weekend than the American and he will be hoping that this is the tournament where he can finally enter the winners circle.
Following Zozo Championship victory, Nico Echavarria is seeking a second title in a row
Nico Echavarria has already created history by becoming only the second Colombian to win on the PGA Tour when taking the spoils at the Zozo Championship a few weeks ago.
Clearly enjoying the taste of victory, Echavarria has picked up where he left off and is currently in a tie for the lead alongside Max Greyserman.
Yet to record a bogey after 36 holes, Echavarria’s steady start was bettered in his second round when he fired to the top of the leaderboard with an effortless round of 63.
Seemingly putting himself in a position to make a birdie on every hole, the world number 99 posted four birdies and one eagle on the front nine and then followed that up with three more birdies coming home.
There is arguably no more confident man in the field currently than Echavarria and with his recent win behind him, he will hope to draw on that experience and put it to good use over both Greyserman and Young who will be desperate to land their first PGA title.
Joel Dahmen delivers when he needs to, can he keep it up?
Thanks to the PGA Tour’s Full Swing documentary Joel Dahmen has become one of the most recognised names on tour.
By his own admission, Dahmen has found his new found celebrity status as something which has been hard to comprehend and as a result his golf has suffered. Even to the point that heading into this week Dahmen was in real danger of losing his PGA status, however through two rounds, Dahmen’s game seems to be finally trending in the right direction.
Currently in a tie for 15th, five shots off the lead, a top fifteen finish this weekend should be enough for Dahmen to move into the top 125 and with it security that his PGA Tour status for next season could be safe.
There is plenty of work to do, but so far so good.
Plenty of other Tour veterans have work to do to secure their top 125 status
Whereas Dahmen’s game is moving in a positive direction, there are others who have plenty of work to do this weekend if they hope to remain on the PGA Tour next season.
The most notable name who will be looking over their shoulder with concern is Daniel Berger. Currently ranked 127th in the overall standings, Berger sneaked through to the weekend but is eight shots back from the leaders.
Starting his third round just a couple of spots off the 125, Berger knows that a push inside the top 30 will probably be enough for him to move back inside the safety of the 125 but there is still work for him to do this weekend.
One man who is looking to make a late charge up the standings is veteran Kevin Streelman. Streelman currently finds himself in a tie for 15th but that has only been enough to move him up three spots in the overall FedEx Standings.
He will start today five shots off the lead and knows that only a top 5 finish is likely to be enough to power himself up into the top 125.
