Storylines to Keep An Eye on This LPGA Season

The 2025 LPGA season is underway with the opening tournament of the season, the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions now in the books.

In what was a tense final round, A Lim Kim held off a charging Nelly Korda to win the first title of the year and get her season off to a bang.

With the LPGA Tour being awash with talent, the 2025 season could be one of the best seasons in memory, ahead of what could be a season full of drama and twists and turns, here are some of the key storylines to keep an eye on.

Will Nelly Korda continue to reign supreme?

2024 was magnificent for Scottie Scheffler who dominated all before him when it came to the regular PGA Tour season, but over on the LPGA Tour Nelly Korda was doing something similar.

Having established herself as the best player on the LPGA Tour for the past few seasons, Korda was simply magnificent last year managing to capture seven LPGA titles and in the process establish herself as the defining force in women’s golf

With a second place finish at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions, it’s clear that Korda is hungry for more and will try and complete the impossible task of surpassing her 2024 campaign.

The one area where Korda will hope to stamp her authority is in the majors. Unlike the men who just have four, there are five majors up for grabs in the women’s game and Korda will hope to get her hands on more than just the one she won in 2024.

The Chevron Championship winner, surprisingly that was just her second Major championship and she will hope to add to that haul in 2025.

What makes Korda stand apart from the rest of her competition is her ability to drive the ball further than the majority of her rivals and with her short game dialled in and her putting constantly improving she is as close to the complete player as you would wish to see.

A feisty competitor on the course she is a cool customer off it and she is without doubt the face of the female game. With women’s golf still proving to be as popular as ever, everyone connected with the game will hope that  Korda will continue to win and take the game to even greater heights.

Others will hope to take the spotlight away from Korda

Nobody can deny that the women’s game isn’t awash with talent and there are a whole host of players who will hope to take some of the spotlight away from Nelly Korda.

One name to watch out for this year is Lilia Vu. Vu spent  most of 2024 as Korda’s nearest challenger and was a huge reason behind America’s emphatic 2024 Solheim Cup triumph.

A former Women’s Open Champion, Vu almost defended her title in 2024 and will hope to be a major factor across all five majors this season.

Whilst she can’t match Korda when it comes to hitting off the tee, Vu has earnt a fine reputation for being a magnificent scrambler and deadly with her irons. Often as consistent as they come, expect another big season from the former world number two.

Golf is an exceptionally hard sport and although someone can burst onto the scene as a young professional, trying to stay there can be a hard thing to do. If you wanted to see the perfect example of how a golfer can slip into the golfing wilderness after emerging onto the scene with a bang, take a look at the career of Lydia Ko.

Starting her career on a trajectory to match the great Annika Sorenstam, Ko then had injury and form issues which saw her tumble down the rankings. Heading into 2024 as a forgotten woman of the LPGA Tour, by the end of the season Ko had reminded the world of what a great talent she is.

Having produced a string of top ten finishes, she was considered a major contender for the Women’s Open and she certainly didn’t disappoint.

Finding herself bang in contention, she didn’t let the miserable weather at St Andrew’s detract her from her goal and whereas others would struggle, Ko would go on to produce one of the best rounds of her career to hold off a host of challengers to lift her first ever Open Championship.

She would back her effort at the Home of Golf up further when she would add a precious Olympic Gold to the silver and bronze medals that she had already collected at previous games.

Heading into this season as the world number two there were conversations that she may retire but Ko has decided to stick with the LPGA Tour for another season. Having started the year with a respectable sixth place finish at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions, look for Ko to leave her mark at some of the most important tournaments as she continues to build her legendary career.

Others will hope to take the spotlight away from Korda

Is this the year that Rose Zhang fulfils her promise?

Rewind eighteen months and the world of women’s golf was ablaze with the arrival of Rose Zhang.

Brilliant as an amateur, Zhang was the best amateur player in the world and her arrival on the LPGA Tour was greeted with huge excitement. That excitement only grew further when she won on her LPGA debut, becoming the first debutant to win a LPGA title on debut since the 1950’s.

With many expecting Zhang to take over at the top of the game, the Zhang period of dominance hasn’t really come to fruition and many have been a little disappointed with how the young American has fared.

Still just 21, time is more than on her side and she will be hopeful of producing some solid golf this year and will have serious hopes of winning her first major.

Having recently revealed that she has been battling a nagging wrist injury since making her debut, her wrist is now reportedly back to full strength. With her injury woes behind her, look for Zhang to build on the 10th place finish achieved at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions and for her to be a regular at the top of LPGA leaderboards.
