Winning a major in golf is seen as reaching the pinnacle of the game. Able to join an exclusive club, any young player that picks up a club will one day hope that they will be able to have the chance of knocking in a putt to win a major.
Over the last few years we have seen several players dominate the major landscape and that was no truer than in 2024 when Xander Schauffele was able to take home two of golf’s greatest prizes. With four majors up for grabs each season - the Masters, PGA Championship, U.S Open and Open, let’s take a look at four players who will be hoping to land their first major title this year.
Ludvig Aberg
Ludvig Aberg has enjoyed a sensational start to life in the professional ranks. Declaring himself professional just before Europe defeated America at the 2023 Ryder Cup, Captain Luke Donald felt that despite is huge inexperience and relative low ranking, Aberg had the talent that belonged at one of golf’s most signature events and his faith in the young Swede would turn out to be completely justified as Aberg helped the Europeans with several value points.
Having climbed as high as four in the world, Aberg enjoyed a solid first full year as a professional in 2024 and found himself in contention at the Masters. Although he would ultimately end up short in winning a green jacket, Aberg showed in his debut showing at Augusta that he is a man that can compete for the biggest trophies in the game and there are huge expectations that he will build on his 2024 efforts and be in the frame for major glory in 2025.
With a swing that is as smooth as silk and able to hit the ball a mile, Aberg has everything that the modern player needs to succeed and it will be no surprise to see him huge take a leap at some point this year.
Winning majors is no easy feat and with this just being his second full season on Tour, it could be that winning a major this season is going to come too early. However, if he finds himself in the shake up just as he did at Augusta, Aberg could well win the first of what many predict will be many majors in 2025.
Tyrell Hatton
Whereas Ludvig Aberg ticks so many of the boxes that you would come to expect from a modern golfer, it could be argued that Tyrell Hatton doesn’t, but what the Englishman may lack for in size he certainly makes up for in ability.
A pugnacious and gritty character, Hatton is a unique force in the world of professional golf and despite many believing that his 2024 move to LIV Golf would actually set his career back, Hatton has shown on numerous occasions that the move to the Saudi funded enterprise has actually made him a much better player.
A winner on his debut season with LIV, Hatton has spent as much time as possible on the DP World Tour and his efforts and commitments have been rewarded with victories at both the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and Dubai Desert Classic.
Thanks to those wins his ranking is more than high enough for him to be eligible for all four majors this season and whilst he won’t start any of them as a favourite for victory, his consistency and ability to make putts when they matter should stand him in great stead should he find himself in contention.
A dark horse, Hatton has repeatedly shown that he has a game that belongs with and can beat the best in the game and he will be hopeful that he can take his career to the next level in 2025 with his first major.
Patrick Cantlay
No professional golfer wants the tag of being the best player in the game not to have won a major and with Xander Schauffele able to successfully shed that tag last season, Schauffele’s great friend Patrick Cantlay will hope to replicate his friends success this season.
For so long a presence inside the game’s top 5, 2024 was a poor one for American who was unable to capture a title and due to him not being as consistent as he would have liked his ranking tumbled out of the top ten and he has some rebuilding to do.
Criticised by so many for his slow and tactical approach to the game, many have predicted that Cantlay has the perfect mentality for when the chips are down during the back nine of a major but so far he has come up short when it matters most.
Rock steady with the putter in his hand, Cantlay can incredibly accurate with both his putter and irons and when dialled in he has the ability to take any course apart. Not able to score as consistently as his rivals, Cantlay will hope to find his spark once again this season and will fly into the majors under the radar.
In danger of becoming one of golf’s forgotten men, he will hope to offer a timely reminder of his talents this year and get that first major that his ability clearly deserves.
Tony Finau
Rewind to the end of 2024 and there were huge fears that Tony Finau would be the latest PGA Tour star to defect to LIV but the big hitting American put those fears to rest when he declared that he would be teeing it up at all of the PGA Tour’s biggest events this year.
Finau is clearly a natural talent. One of the tallest players on the PGA Tour, Finau and his long levers has become one of the most ferocious ball hitters on the PGA Tour and with a short game that has rapidly improved and a putter that can incredibly hot, Finau has all the makings of a major champion.
Whilst he hasn’t gone onto win as much on the PGA Tour as he would have expected, he has multiple titles to his name and is usually a force at the top end of the leaderboards.
A big friendly giant of a man, many believe that what’s holding the man from Utah back is the mental side of the game and if he has serious expectations of being a serial winner and winning a major title, between the ears he simply has to improve.
Yet to really announce himself on the major stage, all it will take for Finau to change that narrative is for him to get hot at the right time. He has shown in the past that he has the game to blow his opponents away and he will be severely hoping that he can produce his best at the game’s biggest events this year.
